The Nordic Filtration Society is a Chapter of the Filtration Society and it was founded in Gothenburg on August 1, 1995 in connection with the 1st Nordic Filtration Symposium. The inaugural meeting was supervised by the "godfathers" Cyril Smith (Chairman of the Filtration Society, UK) and Dr. Albert Rushton.
The basic objective for the Nordic Chapter is to arrange Nordic Filtration Symposia and thus to offer a forum where to discuss "Nordic" solid/fluid separation problems, to establish a Nordic filtration information network and to stimulate contacts between Nordic industries, research institutes and universities.
Like the Filtration Society itself (formed in London 1964) NoFS will be involved in all kinds of techniques used to remove contaminants and products from either a gas or a liquid. Some examples:
Industrial gas cleaning
Water purification
Vacuum and pressure filtration
Filter media
Membrane filtration
Settlers
Cyclones
Centrifuges
Scrubbers
The Filtration Society arranges seminars, symposia, and conferences and informs on all kinds of continuing development work. If you want to join the Filtration Society and the Nordic Filtration Society, you will have a cost effective way of keeping up to date with the developments in separation technology. As a further benefit you will receive the outstanding journal “Filtration” incorporating the transactions with refereed scientific papers. Application forms and other details can be found on the homepage of the Filtration Society Please mark that you would like to belong to the Nordic Chapter of the Filtration Society, NoFS.

The 4th symposium was in Stavanger May 25-26, 1998 and the 5th symposium was held in Gothenburg August 26-27, 1999 and the 6th symposium took place in Lappeenranta on August 21-22, 2000 with some 100 participants. The 7th symposium was arranged in Copenhagen on August 27-28, 2001. In 2002 NoFS took part in arranging the first European Conference on Filtration and Separation in Gothenburg together with the Filtration Society. The 9th symposium was arranged together with CST in Lappeenranta in 2005. The 10th symposium was arranged in Trondheim 2006, the 11th symposium i Copenhagen August 25-26 2008 and the 12th Nordic Filtration Symposium in August 26, 2009 in Gothenburg..
Please observe that 13th Nordic Filtration Symposium will be held in June 10-11, 2010
in Lappeenranta, Finland.

Previous NOFS activities:

A short comment on the 12th Nordic Filtration Symposium August 26, 2009 in Gothenburg
The themes were Energy and Environment nad dealt with
· Filtration and Separation
· Membrane Bioreactors
· Membrane Separation
· Gas Filtration and Separation
· Industrial and Municipal Water Management
· Filter Media
Prof. Gunnar Jonsson, DTH, gave a plenary lecture on new developments in membrane filtration technology. Prof. Hans Theliander gave a plenary lecture on a new laboratory technique can provide reliable data for the prediction and design of filters using simulation technique. Several presentations followed discussing all from new ceramic filter media, “intelligent” filter cloths to development trends in large scale mining filtration. A Short résumé of the 11th Nordic Filtration Symposium, 2008 in Copenhagen
In the heart of Copenhagen and at the waterfront of the harbour The Danish Society of Engineers hosted the 11th Nordic Filtration Conference August 25-26. Professor Gunnar Jonsson, chairman of the organising committee, greeted the 80 participants gathered for an interesting meeting. In the scientific programme 27 papers were presented divided into three sessions – “Filtration and separation”, “Membrane filtration” and “New developments in membrane separation”. As pointed out by J Koskela there is still a substantial interest in cake filtration especially in the mineral industry but increasing in bio fuel and environmental areas. R&D in improved equipment design (capacity and automation) and filter media (e.g. ceramic) is encouraged. Some papers improved our knowledge of filtration of compressible organic solids. The main theme was membrane filtration including both UF (e.g. operating parameters, dynamic and high temperature) and nano. Particularly the wide range of applications was noted – mineral, pulp&paper, bio fuel, birch sap and dairy and not to forget a membrane filtered cold beer. More details regarding the symposium please contact Prof G Jonsson (GJ@kt.dtu.dk).
The Nordic Filtration Society AM decided to have their next 12th Nordic Filtration Symposium in Gothenburg, Sweden in August 2009.
